8. Conditional statements (assume that, if)

Identify these questions

Conditional statement type questions are likely to include a series of statements relating to:

  • All or,
  • Some or,
  • If statement.

They commonly look like this: If A is B and some C is B then it makes sense that….

The strategy to answer these questions

To answer these questions, follow the steps below:

Step 1

Highlight all unique key words, these are words that are not repeating:

Assume that some huys are knis , all jiks are suds , and some aws are huys .

These are: HUYS, KNIS, JIKS, SUDS and AWS

Step 2

Draw Diagrams to help solve this puzzle:

  • As some huys are knis, draw two circles that intersect.
  • As all jiks are suds, there will be two circles, jiks will be in the bigger circle as all jiks are suds.

Finally some Huys are Aws, so again we have two circles that intersect.

Step 3

Look at your drawing.

Evaluate from the options provided.

Which one is therefore correct? (There should be no doubt as to the correct answer)

QUESTION 1

Assume that some actors are singers and all the singers are dancers.

It is true then that:

A: Some actors are dancers.
B: No singer is an actor
C: Either all actors are dancers or no singer is an actor
D: No actors are dancers
E: Some actors are dancers and no singer is an actor

QUESTION 2

Therefore it makes sense that:

A: some tans are nuds
B: some whis are tans
C: all wols are tans
D: all nuds are wols
E: some tans may be nuds

QUESTION 3

Assume that some juls are proos, all uups are juls, some nuls are kuls and all proos are puis.

Therefore it makes sense that:

A: some uups are puis
B: some puis are juls
C: all uups are proos
D: some nuls are puis
E: all puis are proos

Key Rules to remember

  • If all A is B, it means that some B is A not, all B is A.
  • If some A is B, then it's true that some B is A.
  • Use Venn diagrams if available and if not, reason.
  • Note well the unique key words
  • Study the Venn Diagrams

Practice time!

Now, it's your turn to practice.

Click on the button below and start your practice questions. We recommend doing untimed mode first, and then, when you're ready, do timed mode.

Every question has two solutions videos after you complete the question. The first is a quick 60 second video that shows you how our expert answers the question quickly. The second video is a more in-depth 5-steps or less explainer video that shows you the steps to take to answer the question. It's really important that you review the second video because that's where you'll learn additional tips and tricks.

Once you're done with the practice questions, move on to the next checkpoint.

Now, let's get started on your practice questions.
