17. Adding that final polish to your written expression

Last Steps

Well done! Over this course you’ve learnt a lot and now you’re nearly at the end.

In this checkpoint, we’re going to do the final thing – that’s to add polish to your piece.

To do this, all you have to do is review:

  • Spelling - Check spelling throughout. A tip for this is to look at individual words as opposed to reading a 'sentence'. When you read individual words, your mind will consider more greatly, the spelling of the word and whether that spelling is correct.
  • Grammar - Watch out for punctuation, especially correct use of quotation marks ("") and commas.
  • Connecting words - ensure that the connecting word used is the correct one! Some words go well with others.
  • Capitalisation - Remember, capital letters at the beginning of sentences and for names.

To do these last steps, read through and make changes to your piece. These should only be minor changes where you can cross out a letter and replace it or add in characters where you need.

Once done, you should have an exam ready piece!

Don’t neglect this last part – this is what shows your assessor that you care about your piece and that you can:

  • identify mistakes, and
  • fix them up!
