11. Counter-arguments and reorientations (persuasive writing only)

Counter-argument and reorientation – what are they?

The counter-argument and reorientation adds balance to your piece by introducing an opposing view and then disputing that opposing view directly.

To do this:

  1. Come up with a common argument for the ‘other side’. How do you do that? Same way you come up with arguments (see Checkpoint 7) Note: Do not come up with a vague or weak argument for this – 1 sentence.
  2. Address that ‘counter-argument’ by showing how it isn’t ‘true’ – 1 sentence.

In our view, the counter-argument and reorientation doesn’t form the bulk of your score, however, if included and if it is high quality, then it can significantly boost your score.

However, if included and if it is not high quality, then it has the effect of decreasing the overall quality of the essay.

Templates

Use the following wording to write your counter-argument and reorientation (that way, you can use the time to think about the content):

Those who opposed believe that…. However, ….

Simple right?

Below are sample counter-arguments and reorientations that you can use as templates and adapt.

Bullying can take many forms such as online, in person, through phone. Some people who have been bullied in the past say that it has helped them to be a stronger person. Schools nowadays have policies against bullying. Do you think that schools can totally prevent bullying? Argue your point.

Some may argue that there are policies in schools that teach students not to bully one another. However, policies that govern in school may not cover actions done in social media where bullying is rampant.

Schools should use computers to grade students’ essays instead of teachers. Do you agree or disagree? Argue your point.

Those opposed would argue that computers are not equipped to grade essays, which require a human brain. However, computers nowadays are so advanced such that they can learn and think - all skills required in grading essays.

Key Rules to remember:

  • Selection of counter-argument and reorientation should be done carefully to enhance piece.
  • Use templates to work through quickly.
