Identify these questions

A common type of question in numerical reasoning tests are number series that go ‘up’ in value.

They’re questions that look like this:

What is the next number in this series?

2, 4, 6, ?

A 7 B 8 C 9 D 10

OR,

The numbers in each pair of brackets follow the same rule.

Find the missing number.

[16, 33] [7, 15] [?, 55] [2, 5]

A 26 B 27 C 56 D 111

A distinguishing characteristic of these types of questions is that the subsequent value is always higher than the previous number.

The strategy to answer these questions

To answer these questions, you will be required to:

  1. Identify the relationship (this relationship or pattern will hold true for all the numbers) between the numbers, and,
  2. Use that relationship to find the missing number or the grouped number set.

Here are rules to uncovering the pattern when the number series is going up:

  • For smaller gaps between numbers, look at addition.
  • For larger gaps between numbers, look at multiplication. To make this easier, look at the last number as a hint as to what it would be multiplied by. E.g. 2 x ? = 204 (we know that 2 x 2 = 4, so the unknown number would end in 2).
  • For odd gaps, where no standard addition or multiplication results in a pattern, try combinations of any of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division WITH addition or multiplication. But note that because the number does go up, the addition or multiplication must be LARGER than the subtraction or division.

Key Rules to remember

A number series going up is likely to have a pattern that contains:

  • Addition for smaller gaps between numbers.
  • Multiplication for larger gaps between numbers.
  • A combination of any of the 4 operators combined with addition or multiplication for patterns not found with addition or multiplication purely.
